Adele was Wes's bass player, and fellow song writer in church for a number of years. Actually, bass player has only the half of it, Adele also plays and teaches acoustic guitar. And, having claimed to know "a few chords", also played piano regularly in Wes's band, which had to be one of the most multi-instrumented set of musicians on the planet! And in case there was anything else to go, Adele added some luscious harmonica once in a while too, while also adding slightly reluctant, but often highly colourful backing vocals.
As a song writer, Adele writes and arranges very cool stuff! Almost all of Adele's songs have something special and catchy about them. Some carry a gritty determination, the problem being that we simply can't play them loud enough. Others are more tender worship songs, and others are very honest songs to God about what life is like at the moment. In this way Adele is a psalmist, unashamed to write about when the fig tree does not bud, and when dreams seem far off.
It's this kind of character that especially endeared Adele to us, and also brought about our slightly emotional, and very experimental first cd, The Basement Sessions, the remaining songs on the stockpile of Adele's London season, before she returned to Pretoria. Much inter-continental communication and excitement in putting that together! Adele is still in Pretoria, occasionally writing crazy emails, and sending over the odd recordings of her latest genius. We all miss you.
