The Basement Sessions began as a recording of the final songs Adele wrote in London, before returning to Pretoria, South Africa, in April 2002. We recorded 15 songs in a single day, most of them one take recordings, and many of them Wes and Rich were playing for the first time. Those were the days!
The results were respectable, despite Adele having a shocking cold, and us all having a long day! The problem was... the songs we had recorded seemed to have more potential than had been achieved. We had ideas of 'if we had time we'd do this... and this...'. And Wes got rather restless about all of this...
In June we had drafted in Drew, (without Adele knowing) to add some drums for a start. Not too easy, as the originals weren't recorded with click tracks. Luckily for us, Drew is genius on a stick! And things came together - more instruments, mandolins, loads of mixing, (thanks Jeff), our first graphic design job... it was so much fun!
So while TBS has great sentimental value to us for all sorts of reasons, don't expect the most polished arrangements and performances. But we hope you'll get a good taste of fun, life, and a sense of God's joy and love about us through Adele's anointed writing, and our best try, as our first full Teapot CD.
